Rental booking tips and tricks:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Book your rental home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have coupons for nearby shops and restaurants.
Choosing the perfect rental in the Hatteras area:
- Select a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Waterfront windsurfers' retreat on the sound with private dock, decks, fast WiFi has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property manager before reserving the property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- If there's a certain Hatteras attraction you crave, browse properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
Additional considerations:
- We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Upon check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your home life. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
