Strategies to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- Booking a rental in Fall or Spring months is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies usually offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitors guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Make a plan and choose your prefectvacation home:
- Start by choosing potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Dog-friendly home with private saltwater pool, hot tub, game room, & fireplace has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Request details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
Additional considerations:
- Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Note any issues with the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few problems.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at departure. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
