Build a handsome resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest rental units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are literally steps from the beachfront. Bring the bicycles, because Buxton’s unique stores, eateries, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD car - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers). The interior has been professionally-decorated with comfortable and fun beach décor. You'll have access to an outside shower and a patio. An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape.

How to get the best vacation rental experience:
Finding your best deal:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is high season in the Hatteras area. Book your vacation home in the Spring or Fall to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guides which will include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning and choosing yourrental home:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Terrific townhouse w\/ pool access, private W\/D, central AC, and ocean view has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible online. If not, email or call the host before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what is right for your trip.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or might be applied to your invoice.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- To make sure damages aren't linked to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas during arrival. Contact the property manager immediately to document any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and places you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- At departure, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on great ratings to stimulate new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
