Tips and Tricks to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
When to visit Hatteras & When to book:
- The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Reserving your vacation rental six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Hatteras vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guide magazines which will include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning and choosing your Hatteras vacation home:
- Start by having your group agree to a vacation week and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Lovely home in oceanfront location with central AC, access to pool\/hot tub has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the host before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is right for your family.
- Some properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's a certain Hatteras destination you crave, look for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
Advice for your stay:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many problems.
- Keep the property locked while you are away! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent ratings to stimulate more bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
