Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To book the largest vacation home within your budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local Hatteras area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

  • Begin by choosing potential vacation weeks and a maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Oceanview Waves, Saltwater Pool, Hot Tub, Game Room, Screened Porch has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before you book the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or could be applied to your agreement.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

  • Add the host's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your visit, inspect the property for any problem areas when you arrive. Call the property manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on good reviews to stimulate more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback.
