OCEANVIEW Salvo — Spirtsail Ct. — You don’t have to be a Jimmy Buffett fan to be a parrot head, someone who loves the laidback tropical lifestyle replete with good times, good friends, good drinks, and good vibes. THE PARROT HEAD INN embraces that spirit, immersing guests in a six-bedroom/five-full and two-half-bath heaven of vacation living.

It’s painless to spot this three-story sunny yellow home before you pull into the driveway that can accommodate four cars. The welcoming neighborhood provides simple beach access, although the enormous private pool may beckon first. An adjacent sand volleyball court just might inspire some energy exertion, knowing that a shaded 6-person hot tub stands ready to soothe tired bodies. There’s also an outdoor shower and half-bath for added convenience. The home’s bottom level fosters more camaraderie in a game room featuring a foosball table and pool table, as well as a wet bar area with a full-size refrigerator to chill beverages, a microwave, and a dishwasher. Also on this level are two bedrooms: a king room with an attached game room and office area and a room with two new pyramid bunk beds that share a full bathroom. Three more bedrooms occupy the mid-level, including a king master and two queen masters, all with ensuite baths. The final bedroom, an ensuite king master is on the top level. All of the bedrooms feature Intelligent TVs and access to the multi-level decks to savor the Outer Banks breezes and star-filled skies.

A cavernous, open floor plan defines the living space of the top level, where new living room furnishings anchor the great room’s calming ambience. Plan movie nights with the streaming capability of the Intelligent TV or choose a board game from the many included. A separate sunroom is located just off the great room and provides even more space for your group to spread out. A huge, gleaming kitchen, with a new dishwasher and stove, is a chef’s delight. Serve meals at the wide granite counter, at the ten-seat dining table, and an additional four-seat table in the great room area. There’s also a picnic table on the adjacent deck for alfresco dining with a view.

Sticking to a rental budget:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserve your Hatteras vacation home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.

  • Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent reviews to inspire more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback.
