Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To find the best value, consider changing your vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning and picking the rightvacation home:
- Select a group leader, select your vacation week, and choose a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Coastal home with three decks, outdoor shower, AC, & W\/D - near beach has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, email or call the property manager before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
- If there's a specific Hatteras attraction you long to visit, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More considerations:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your family vacation.
- During arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
