Rental home tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Book your Hatteras vacation in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to choose and book a perfect Hatteras rental:
- Select a group lead, select your dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. The Docks Cottage - Hatteras Island, North Carolina has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out which bed configuration is right for your family.
- Is your family looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Document any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected everything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to propel more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
