Tips to get the perfect Hatteras rental experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To find the best value, consider changing your family's Hatteras vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many property management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guides which often include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Narrow your Search:
- Start by choosing your vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Charming 2-bedroom cottage near ocean in Buxton with AC, WiFi, Pets OK has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your stay:
- We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the property manager immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of issues.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a terrific vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
