Build a handsome resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are literally steps from the beachfront. Bring the bicycles, because Buxton’s unique stores, eateries, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD car - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers). The interior has been professionally-decorated with comfortable and fun beach décor. You'll have access to an outside shower and a patio. An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape.

How to find the best Hatteras rental experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To get the best value, try changing your family's Hatteras vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose vacation dates and budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Dog-friendly townhouse with pool access, central AC, washer\/dryer & ocean view has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before you book the home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation family.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- To make sure damages are not linked to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Speak to the host immediately to document any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
