• Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
• To get the best rental home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Hatteras attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
• Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
• Property managers typically offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.

Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
• If your family is traveling with pets, you must book a rental that allows animals. Get information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
• If there's a specific Hatteras beach you love, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your needs.

• Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
• Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
• After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to propel future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective.
