Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect vacation rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your rental 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Reserve your rental home in Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Choosing the best rental home:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Three-story beachfront home with private pool, hot tub, decks, & ocean views has 9 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If not, contact the property management company before reserving the home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your family.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
Tips for a wonderful stay:
- Get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- To ensure that damages are not attributed to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas when you arrive. text the rental manager immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to drive more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
