Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation property experience:
When to book & When to go:
- The earlier you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. Reserve your Hatteras rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers frequently offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select a group lead, choose your vacation week, and select a budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Classic Hatteras Island beach cottage, only a 5 minute stroll to the beach has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible online. Otherwise, call the property management company before you book your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is optimal for your vacation group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your contract.
- If there's an individual Hatteras attraction you simply love, keep an eye out for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Additional considerations:
- Get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected everything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
