Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To find the best value, shift your vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property management companies typically offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guides which include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Finding the perfect vacation home in the Hatteras area:
- To start, have your family agree to a vacation week and a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Cape Point, charming 7-Bedroom Oceanfront + Pets Stay Free! has 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property manager before you book your rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to establish what is best for your trip.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or may be applied to your agreement.
More considerations for your visit:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to compel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
