Tricks and tips to get the best Hatteras vacation property experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. To book the best rental for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Finding the perfect vacation home:
- First and foremost, have your group commit to trip dates and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Waterfront House w\/ Private Hot Tub - Ocean Views, WiFi, AC, Gas Fireplace, W\/D has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If not, email the property management company before reserving the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
During your stay:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be respectful. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a excellent stay? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
