Strategies to get the perfect Hatteras vacation home experience:
Money saving strategies:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To book the best rental within your budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities.
- The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to select the best vacation rental:
- Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Oceanside Backyard Oasis pool, hot tub, tiki hut, fire pit has 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is commonly accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, reach out to the host before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- If there's a specific Hatteras beach you are enamored with, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Allowable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
Know before you go:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on great feedback to inspire future bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
