Tricks and tips for getting the best Hatteras vacation rental experience:
Find your perfect rental home:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, change your vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Choosing the best vacation home:
- Select your vacation dates and budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Semi-Oceanfront Beach Cottage II. Access across street to shops and restaurants has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
- Does your family require particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Considerations for your stay:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
- Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to stimulate future bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review find their best vacation rental. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
