Vacation rental tips:
Get the most from your budget:
- To get the largest rental home within budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Hatteras attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked early. Reserving your rental 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Some hosts and property managers offer rate reductions for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning, selecting, and booking the rightrental:
- To start, have your family agree to the best dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration you need. “The Cape” TOP FLOOR In Oceanfront Resort Rodanthe Condos has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. Otherwise, contact the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. Call the rental manager right away to report your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
