Finding the best vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking in Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Some hosts offer promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers often offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Choosing and booking the bestrental home:
- Select dates and maximum budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Oceanfront Condo w\/Free WiFi, Central AC, Ocean View, Private W\/D, & Shared Pool has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking pages. If not, contact the property owner before you book the vacation home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
- To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's visit, note any problem areas during arrival. Get in touch with the property manager immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to stimulate new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
