Strategies to get the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
Finding the best rental value:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is a good way to save on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Start by selecting your vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Hidden Gem 4 Bedroom Home in Hatteras has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is often available online. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before you book the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you must book a property that allows animals. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Tips for your stay:
- We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. Call the host right away to report any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
