How to find the best Hatteras vacation rental experience:
Getting the most from your spending budget:
- Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local accommodations and attractions.
Choosing and booking your prefectrental:
- Choose a group leader, choose your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Family, Fun and Fishing! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before you reserve your rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your contract.
During your stay:
- Get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas during arrival. Call the property manager immediately to record your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental while you're out. Keep your property safe!
- Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
