Strategies for getting the perfect vacation home experience:
Sticking to your rental budget:
- Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. To get the best value, try changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning, picking, and booking the rightvacation home:
- Choose a group leader, select your dates, and select a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Canalfront home with private dock, sunset views & fast WiFi - 2 dogs welcome has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If not, reach out to the host before reserving the rental. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out which bed configuration is suitable for your group.
- If there's a particular Hatteras beach you simply love, search for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.
Considerations for your stay:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
- Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if a dispute is filed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a excellent time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
