Finding the best rental value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Waves. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a good way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Booking your vacation property six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites often offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is right for your trip.
  • Are you looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.

  • Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
