Tips and Tricks to get the optimal rental home experience:
When to go & When to book:
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. To get the best value, try changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property managers typically offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Make a plan and pick your prefectrental:
- To start, have your group decide on vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. Townhome by the beach with screened deck, seasonal pool access, & W\/D has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available online. Otherwise, contact the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
- If your group is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
Have a wonderful stay:
- Get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
- Note any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
