Tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:
Finding the best rental value:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, shift your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning and picking the rightrental home:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Wonderful ceanfront condo with ocean views, pool, & central AC has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to book a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a particular Hatteras destination you love, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
During your stay:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many concerns.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Note any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- At departure, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a excellent time? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
