How to get the best vacation home experience:
How to get the best value:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. To find the best value, consider shifting your family's Hatteras trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have coupons for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and pick the perfectrental:
- Start by having your family choose dates and a budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Ocean & Beachfront House w\/Private Washer\/Dryer, Hot Tub, WiFi, AC, Shared Pool has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your trip.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
- Does your group require special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More tips for your visit:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect your property!
- Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
