Vacation rental home tips:

Find your perfect rental:

  • The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Reserving your rental property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
  • Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your family select dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Spacious Beach-House: 5BR Hatteras Island home steps from OBX NC Beaches has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible online. If they are not listed, call the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • Visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

More tips for your visit:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents a lot of difficulties.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Record any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video of the property to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your review find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
