Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation property experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, try shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guides that include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Choosing and booking the rightrental:
- To start, have your family agree to vacation dates and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Waterfront home with private pool, hot tub, pool table & fireplace -dog-friendly has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your group.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
Have a great stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your .
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many concerns.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- When it's time to leave, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget any personal items. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
