Tips to get the optimal vacation home experience:
When to visit & When to reserve a Hatteras rental home:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in Avon. To get the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers usually offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Finding the best rental in Avon:
- Begin by selecting a vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Waterfront home with private hot tub, dock, sound views & decks - dog-friendly has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available online. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before you book your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
- If your family is bringing pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly rental. Get details on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking
Additional considerations:
- Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of problems.
- Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your vacation.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed everything at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to inspire more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
