Stylish, calming and private, step back in time at the "Old Bach," an oceanfront 1975 trapezoidal A-frame, overlooking the massive double dune of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Inspired by Chris's childhood summers in New Zealand at his family's bach (a rustic beach bungalow, pronounced "batch"), we newly gut-remodeled and completely modernized the home, while maintaining the original appeal and character. The Old Bach is located on a huge, private oceanfront lot at the end of a peaceful, private street. There is off-street parking for 3-4 cars, including the carport under the home.
Our recent remodel involved flipping the floor plan to create a huge, open living area on the top floor, with a full kitchen, dining banquette, and comfortable living room with a sizable flat-screen intelligent TV. The living room opens to an enormous deck and pergola complete with a dining table and a comfortable sectional. From the deck you can glimpse the ocean between the dunes.
Downstairs, the staircase is open to the front hall and the cozy TV room, with another sizable flat-screen intelligent TV. There are two queen bedrooms on this level, as well as a stacking washer and dryer, a full bath with a corner shower, and the primary suite. Located in what was originally a enormous covered porch, the primary bedroom and bathroom are surrounded by windows. The en-suite primary bathroom features an additional large soaking tub with a shower, and a toilet with a bidet attachment.
The home features all new plumbing, electric, appliances, floor, HVAC, kitchen, bathrooms, and paint. The kitchen features stainless steel appliances and premium natural stone quartzite countertops. Both bathrooms have terrazzo floor tiles, handmade wall tiles, and oak console vanities with cast concrete basins.
There is a shady deck with a hammock under the home, as well as two outdoor showers: an open shower where the beach path meets the home, and a private double shower with a changing area. The beach is accessed by a trail leading through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and over the dunes to the pristine beach.
There are multiple good eateries and modest markets within walking distance. A bigger supermarket is available in close by Avon to the south, or Nags Head to the north.
We newly purchased The Old Bach and modernized it together as a labor of adore. It is our enjoyment to share it with you, but we are looking for discerning guests who value privacy, well-designed spaces, and mutual respect.

How to get the best Hatteras rental experience:
Find your perfect rental home:
- Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. To book the largest rental for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines have offers and deals for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose your dates and max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Stylish Oceanfront 70s A-Frame, Fully Renovated has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you book your rental. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. .
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pets before booking.
Know before you go:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your . Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute is filed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
- Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on excellent feedback to stimulate future bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will be thankful you shared your review find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
