Getting the best vacation rental experience:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring months is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Booking websites often offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Choose vacation week and spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Oceanside 3-bedroom cottage in Salvo has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish which bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you are enamored with, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is traveling with pets, search for a property that allows animals. Get details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
Have a wonderful stay:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- During arrival, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your vacation home while you are away. Protect your property!
- On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property managers rely on great ratings to inspire future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
