Our top Hatteras vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Get the best rental home value:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best value, change your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some owners offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have discounts for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose your vacation dates and spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Sprawling & luxe home with pool, hot tub, balconies, grill, game room, & AC has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the property management company before you book the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish what is best for your group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges may be applied to your agreement.
- Visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. .
Advice for your stay:
- Get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental property. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many problems.
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your family vacation.
- Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a terrific source for finding the best local spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed everything at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
