Strategies to get the perfect vacation property experience:
Finding the best rental home value:
- Summer months are the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To book the best rental home within budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Hatteras attractions. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines that include special offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
How to pick the perfect rental in Hatteras:
- Select a group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Spacious 6-bedroom house with pool, hot tub and private docks, Hatteras Village has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the host before reserving your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
More considerations:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific resource to find the best local spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
