Tricks and tips to get the perfect Hatteras vacation rental experience:

Get the most from your rental home budget:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. Book your Hatteras rental home in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Select vacation dates and budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Spacious 6-bedroom house with pool, hot tub and private docks, Hatteras Village has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your family.
  • If your family is bringing pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • To make sure no damages are linked to your visit, note any problem areas during arrival. E-mail the property manager right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a excellent vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
