Tips to get the perfect rental home experience:
Finding the best value:
- To get the best value, try shifting your family's Hatteras vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, , and reduced traffic.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Booking websites typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain deals for local shops and restaurants.
Choosing the perfect rental home:
- Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Soundside Hatteras Island home, near the Inn at Rodanthe! has 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If not, email the property owner before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- If your family is bringing pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your visit:
- Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on good reviews to propel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
