WHERE ARE WE GOING?
The name of this home, Wind Dreamin', kinda says it all! The wind is here. If you want to kiteboard, windsurf, sail, or appreciate other water sports, this is the place.
This is a roomy Sound-front home which features sunsets and sound vistas galore. This home is directly on the Pamlico Sound. There are fewer than 70 actual Sound-front homes in the Salvo/Tri-Villages area, this is one of them. Don't be fooled by other advertisements that make a rental appear to be water front. "Sound view", "semi Sound-front", and photos showing a view of the Sound, are not Sound-front. From many of these homes the water is tantalizingly close and yet you have to drive a mile or more to get to public access to the water.
IMPROVEMENTS IN 2019
New heart pine wood floors and fresh paint in both master bedrooms. Wood floors in most of the home now. Cleaner, and allergens are greatly reduced. New king beds and beds in those rooms as well.
WHY CHOOSE WINDDREAMIN?
We get the question all the time, so, yes, there is WIFI, good WIFI.
This home has a private dock and a private walkway that stretch onto the Pamlico Sound. Two ways for kiters, wind surfers, kayakers, and other watermen to savor the Pamlico Sound. The backyard of this home is on the Sound. No access issues. Backyard access to the water. Kite, paddle, SUP, windsurf, jet ski, sail, water ski, wake board, all right from the home. Most Soundfront homes on Hatteras have a sea wall, stairs, sea grass, marsh, or other impediments between the home and the Sound. Wind Dreamin offers direct simple access to the water from a semi-sandy tiny beach near the water's edge. Yes, the water sometimes a bit muddy the first few feet, but get out into the Sound any distance and the footing is back to sandy. Arguably we have the best access to the Sound in the Tri-Villages area and one of the finest on Hatteras Island. A deck at the end of the dock makes it huge enough for the picnic table we have placed, nothing better than a meal over the water at the end of the dock.
THE COMPETITION?
Many of the homes on Hatteras that are Sound front do not have direct access to the Sound. That includes the homes in the Wind Over Waves subdivision, on streets like Otter Way, Turtle Court, and Sand Dollar Court. The homes in Mirlo, which is at the north end of Rodanthe now have an elevated highway constructed in front of them. It is sad, but the noise a problem, and their vistas have been decimated. You can paddle under the elevated highway but not kiteboard. Many other homes on the Sound have sea walls, not sill fences, with slippery steps to the water, and problematic access for water sports.
WHERE IS IT AGAIN?
The home is located in the Outer Banks on Hatteras Island. The geography is unique. The home is in the tri-villages area of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. The home is located in Salvo, NC, and Hatteras Island becomes very narrow here. The island is only 12 home tons wide. Three to four tons on the west side of NC 12 and 8 or so tons on the east side. That means that you can enjoy the roar of the Atlantic Ocean, giant waves, big dunes, and the best surfing on the East Coast within a 5-7 min. walk from the home. With the home on the Pamlico Sound, and mainland North Carolina 15 miles to the west the sun sets over the water, the most spectacular way to begin an evening. Walk to the Blue Whale for coffee in the morning, enjoy the sunrise over the Atlantic, body surf during the mid-day, walk back to the home, kayak at dusk, and jump in the hot tub to enjoy the sunset, all never more than about 1900 feet from the home. Go to this link for more information on the Outer Banks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Banks.
Hatteras Island is better than the North Beaches area of the Outer Banks. The North Beaches areas of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Corolla, Duck, and the like offer Home Depot and Lowes, McDonalds and Burger King, Walmart and Kohls. Hatteras Island has hardly any chain stores or chain eateries, and more than 36 miles of undisturbed national seashore, much of it accessible by four wheel drive car. Hatteras Island offers painless access to the best parts of the Pamlico Sound with countless possibilities for water sports. The Atlantic Ocean beaches on Hatteras Island are wide and flat. In the North Beaches area long sea walls and narrow beaches abound.
WHAT IS THERE ONCE WE ARRIVE?
A convenient entry via a drive up ramp to the first level makes unloading a breeze and provides purpose constructed handicap accessibility. The first floor offers elegant Sound vistas from the living, dining and kitchen area. There is a enormous full bath on the first floor that is handicapped accessible. Also on the first floor is a master suite complete with king bed, and an ensuite bath that features a European wet room shower, ideal for a handicapped person as the shower provides roll in access. The other bedroom on this floor offers a queen bed and a twin bed, ideal for just about any configuration, couple, couple with modest kid, even two guys. The sound front deck on this level offers a hot tub to relax after a hard day of play and features magnificant sunset vistas.
Venture upstairs to the cavernous second level with a sitting area, a half bath, a full hall bath and the remaining 3 bedrooms. The master suite with king bed, the bunk bedroom (2 pyramid beds which can sleep 4-6 kids) and the final King bedroom all have deck access and vistas overlooking the Pamlico Sound.
Bed linens and bath towels are supplied. Bring or buy beach towels. Please do not bring bath towels to the beach.
There's an enclosed outdoor shower to wash off after a day out on the water. There is a dock to the Sound and a modest beach which provides a staging area for water sports including kite boarding, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking. This home provides kite-in/kite-out access to the Sound. Leave your kite gear, kayak, or SUP board at the water's edge, have lunch, go right back out for an afternoon session. If you wish to rent kayaks, Hobie cats, jet skis, SUP boards or even bicycles just walk next door to Hatteras Water Sports, check their website, or call them.
WindDreamin' has a little sandy beach at the edge of the Pamlico Sound. WindDreamin' is 2000 feet or 4/10 of a mile from the Atlantic Ocean beach. Walking time is perhaps 7-8 mins.. The drive is as little as a min. or two. To get to the beach go down Sunset Drive back to NC 12. Go right onto NC 12. Go left onto Dory Road. When Dory Road turns parallel to the beach there is a sandy path that provides public access to the beach. There is a sizable sand dune go cross on your way to the beach. Senior citizens may find walking on the sand dune challenging.
The kitchen has stainless appliances, granite, and wood floors. The furnishings has been upgraded, the linens is new, the paint is fresh.
This home has a private feel. Pull down the driveway lined with trees and bushes and you feel like you have arrived at your own private little getaway. Kids can play safely on flat spacious grounds, and the water's edge is so gently sloped it feels like a zero-entry swimming pool.
TRIP INSURANCE
We recommend that you purchase trip insurance and to not rely on an owner cancellation policy. Cancellation policies don't help most of the time. We highly recommend the insuremytrip website. We are not affiliated with that company, and make no money from that referral.
We use insuremytrip for our personal travel, great price, and superior customer service. They answer their phone, their CSRs speak English as a first language, and they are knowledgeable. But by far the most important reason to use insuremytrip.com is that they waive the pre-existing condition clause in the policies they sell.
So why is waiver of the pre-ex clause so important? Trip insurance covers you if you or someone in your travelling event, or a close relative gets sick. A pre-existing condition is something that existed at the time of purchase of the coverage. So if your mother is ill with heart disease when you book your vacation, and she goes in the hospital with heart failure 2 days before your trip then most travel insurance companies will reject the claim on the ground of a pre-existing condition, and of course you're long past help from the owner's cancellation policy. The problem is that nearly all the events or conditions that could cause you to miss your trip were pre-existing at the time you book your trip. So the pre-ex clause swallows up most of the situations that might occur and routinely denies you coverage. Therefore a waiver of this clause is the single most important aspect of purchasing trip insurance.
The thinking at insuremytrip is that no one books a trip intending to not go, but many of us have a appreciated one with some pre-existing condition.
So why purchase trip insurance as opposed to relying on the cancellation policy of your travel vendor? Because most causes of not going on vacation are not known until very close in time to departure. Hurricane, power outage, or again, imagine Mom has heart disease. If she is in the hospital a month or two before you go, chances are she is going to be out by the time of your travel. You don't know she is going to have another decline and hospital admission until days before you depart. At that point nearly no travel vendor, and certainly no Vacation Rental By Owner rental cancellation policies, are going to refund your money.
So, again, we wholeheartedly endorse purchasing trip insurance from insuremytrip. By the way, the foregoing has been composed by the owner of this rental home, who is a lawyer, and has studied this area sufficiently to be well informed on this topic.

Vacation rental home tips:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
- To get the best rental for your budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Hosts sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to choose and book the perfectvacation home:
- Start by having your group commit to a vacation week and a spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. SOUND FRONT!, Kite-In\/Out! Sunsets! Dock! has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out which bed configuration is best for your vacation.
- If your family is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you crave, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
Know before you go:
- We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of issues.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, note any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on great feedback to stimulate future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
