Strategies to get the best vacation property experience:
Finding your perfect rental home:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the most suitable vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Hatteras restaurants and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines contain deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Planning and choosing the perfect Hatteras rental home:
- Select a group leader, choose your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Semi-Oceanfront home with direct access to the beach! has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property owner before reserving the rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
During your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Add a note with the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
