Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Money saving strategies:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Reserving your rental property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
- Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Some property managers offer promotional rates for veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
How to pick the best vacation rental in Rodanthe:
- First and foremost, have your family commit to dates and a budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Ocean & Sound Views, 4BR house, Private Pool & Hot Tub, WiFi, AC, Dog Friendly has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property owner before booking the property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's an individual Hatteras destination you are crazy about, search for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Note any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a great time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
