Finding the best rental home experience:
Money saving strategies:
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. To get the best value, try changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Some property management companies offer special rates for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby tours and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking yourvacation home:
- Select your dates and spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Luxe, ocean- & sound-view home with private pool, hot tub, decks & game room has 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is commonly available on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.

Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or costs could be applied to your contract.
- If there's a specific Hatteras beach you long to visit, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Additional considerations:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.

- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- At Check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great source for finding the best local spots.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a fantastic stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
