Our top Hatteras rental property booking tips and tricks:
When to book & When to go:
- Summer months are high season in Hatteras. To get the largest rental for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain coupons for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your trip dates, and choose a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Luxe, ocean- & sound-view home with private pool, hot tub, decks & game room has 6 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. If they are not listed, call the host before you book the rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is right for your family.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners charge additional pet fees.
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- Upon check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
