Rental booking tips and tricks:
Finding the best value:
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning and choosing the rightvacation home:
- First, have your group choose dates and a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Dog-friendly, oceanfront escape with private pool, hot tub, boardwalk & decks has 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you reserve your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what bed configuration is best for your vacation group.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a great vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
