Build a handsome resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest rental units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are literally steps from the beachfront. Bring the bicycles, because Buxton’s unique stores, eateries, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD car - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers).
Back at your vacation home, you'll be greeted by a townhouse that has been completely remodeled, essentially making it brand new. Everything including its floors, furnishings, appliances, and even the very paint used on the walls has been updated. On top of that, the interior has been professionally decorated with comfortable and fun beach décor. You'll have access to an outside shower, a patio, and even an elevator. An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape. Combining the ambience of home with a beautiful flair, you'll always remember your time here.

Tips and Tricks to get the perfect rental home experience:
Get the most from your rental budget:
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. To book the largest rental home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Hatteras attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Owners sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on local tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Start by having your family choose vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your family needs. Dog-friendly townhouse with pool, ocean views, central AC, washer\/dryer & patio has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before reserving the rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what is right for your trip.
- Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
Additional considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you are out. Protect your property!
- Note any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if there is a dispute.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all belongings. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
