Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best rental for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Often, rental management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Make a plan and choose the rightvacation home:
- Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration you need. Dog-friendly ocean view home with private hot tub & porches - 2 lots to beach has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, email the property manager before booking the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs might be applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
More considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental while you're away. Keep your property safe!
- During check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on good feedback to compel future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
