Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation home experience:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a great way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Choosing the best rental home in the Hatteras area:

  • Start by choosing trip dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Dog-friendly, canal view home w\/ fast WiFi, washer\/dryer, & central AC has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to work out what is suitable for your vacation family.
  • Some properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Tips for your stay:

  • Add the owner's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect your property!
  • Record any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your peaceful home life. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a fantastic time? Most rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
