Build a impressive resort village on a favorite Hatteras Island location, and they will come. The Cottages at the Cape are the closest vacation units to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton. They share a long border with the national park and are steps from the beachfront. Bring the bicycles because Buxton's unique stores, eateries, and lighthouse are all very close. Forget the 4WD car - those in the know have discovered that the three jetties to the east of the cottages produce some of the best fishing, surfing, and swimming on this island. Walking to the south will take you to open beaches, the famed Cape Point, and, if luck is on your side during the summer, a few sea turtle nests (be careful to stay outside the barriers). The interior has been professionally decorated with comfortable and fun beach décor, and you'll have access to an outdoor shower and a patio. An escape to the cape never looked so good as at Cottages at the Cape.

Tips and Tricks to get the best vacation property experience:
When to visit & When to reserve a Hatteras rental home:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Book your rental home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Hatteras visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
