Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Hatteras vacation property experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
- Summertime is high season in the Hatteras area. To get the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
How to pick the best rental:
- Choose your vacation week and max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Oceanfront Classic Cottage has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
- Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Additional considerations:
- Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
- At Check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
