Our top Avon vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
How to get the best rental value:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. To book the largest rental home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning, selecting, and booking your prefect Hatteras rental home:
- Choose vacation week and spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Waterfront\/Private Pier, Water Access\/Pool&Tennis club\/Kayaks\/SUP\/ping-pong has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you book the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your family.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
Advice for a great stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your .
- Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
