Our top Rental home tips:
How to get the best rental value:
- Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. Booking your Hatteras vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is an excellent way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites typically offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have offers and deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Selecting the best rental in the Hatteras area:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your dates, and choose a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Winds Up in Avon! Home w\/ Hot Tub, Private Launch Dock, and Windsports Access has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking websites. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If there's an individual Hatteras attraction you are enamored with, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or may be applied to your contract.
More considerations:
- Add the owner's contact info to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of problems.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local beaches.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a excellent time? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
