Our top Hatteras vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Get the best rental value:
- Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Planning and choosing your Hatteras rental:
- Select a group lead, select your dates, and select a budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Warm & happy home a short walk from the beach with central AC & screened porch has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If not, reach out to the host before booking the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what configuration is right for your vacation family.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.
Know before you go:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on good ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your review find their best vacation rental. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
