Getting the best Hatteras vacation home experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in the Hatteras area. To find the most suitable rental home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants.
- Some property managers offer promotional rates for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain deals for local accommodations and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select vacation week and spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Soundside - Dog Friendly 3 Bedroom with Hot Tub has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before reserving the vacation home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you love, browse rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Know before you go:
- Put the owner's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few problems.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would back home.
- To make sure no damages are linked to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas during check in. Make contact with the rental manager immediately to document any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- At departure, take a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and scan for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
