How to get the best value:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking your Hatteras vacation rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Some hosts offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
- Property management companies frequently offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides have money saving offers on nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the property management company before you book the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
Know before you go:
- Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of problems.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
