Strategies to get the perfect vacation home experience:
Sticking to your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. Reserve your Hatteras rental in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your family qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local Hatteras area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
How to select the best rental home in the Hatteras area:
- Choose dates and spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Shore Break Cottage- Steps to Beach- Incredible Views- Community Pool has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is usually available on booking websites. If not, email the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is best for your group.
- If your group is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Hatteras destination you are crazy about, look for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Know before you go:
- Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let crooks ruin your holiday.
- Upon arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a terrific time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
